Each year in June, the Glencoe District Lions Club sponsors a competition in the three local elementary schools for three lucky students to receive a flag pole, complete with Canada flag, planted on their front yard. The students must write a short essay on what Canada Day means to them, three winners are chosen, and the flag poles installed during Canada Day festivities. The pciture shows winner Dean Doupe of Middlemiss, with Lions John Di Cesare and Rudy Huver, beside his new pole and flag.
Another winner is Kaius Beamis from Wardsville, and…
The third winner is Alexander Jannsens of River Drive in Woodgreen. Here is Alexander and his younger brother, Aaron, raising their new flag on their new pole, while mom and Lion Rudy look on.
Lions John and Rudy pour a concrete base for the new flag pole, making sure the pole is plumb. The concrete is allowed to harden for at least a day before they come back and install the pole and flag.
